The common type of thermostat is the wax thermostat, which is installed between the engine and the radiator connecting pipe. Its working principle is to control the flow direction of the engine cooling liquid through the physical state change of the internal paraffin.When the vehicle is just started, the engine water temperature is not high. At this time, the paraffin in the thermostat is in solid state. Under the action of the spring, the spacer blocks the upper pipeline so that the engine coolant with low temperature cannot enter the vehicle cooler. The engine coolant is directly returned to the engine. This cycle is called "small cycle". With the operation of the engine, the temperature of the coolant passing through the thermostat in a small cycle also rises. The wax inside the thermostat begins to melt. The melted volume of the wax expands to push the spacer against the spring pressure, and part of the coolant begins to flow into the cooler for cooling.

The thermostat is installed in the engine compartment. There are usually two phenomena of thermostat failure. First, the thermostat cannot be opened. At this time, the water temperature gauge shows that the water temperature is in the high-temperature area, but the fan of the cooling water tank does not rotate, and the engine temperature is high; Second, if the thermostat is not closed, the water temperature will rise slowly. In winter, the vehicle is started for 10 to 20 minutes, but the water temperature is still in the low temperature zone, and the vehicle idles at high speed.
