1965 mustang fuel level gauge not working

There are many reasons why the fuel gauge may not display properly: the fuel sensor is in the tank, and the fuel filter. Failure to transmit the correct resistance value may cause the gauge to not display if there is a problem. There is a problem with the fuel gauge itself. You can replace it with a water temperature gauge and see if it's the problem. Replacing the watch core can determine the circuit drive problem of the instrument panel. Problem with the sensor cable. These problems are not easy to solve personally, it is recommended to go to the repair shop or 4S shop for repair.

How the fuel gauge works:

1. The fuel gauge mainly consists of two parts: a transmitter that measures the fuel level in the fuel tank and a fuel gauge that displays the measurement results to the driver.

2. The transmitter is located in the fuel tank of the car. It consists of a buoy attached to a thin metal rod, usually made of Styrofoam. The ends of the metal rods are mounted on the variable resistors. A resistor is a device that prevents current from passing through. The higher the resistance, the lower the current flow.

3. In the tank, the variable resistor consists of a resistive material with one end connected to ground. A sliding arm attached to the fuel gauge slides along the sheet of resistive material, conducting current from the fuel gauge to the resistor.

4. If the sliding arm is close to the ground end of the resistor, the resistance material through which the current flows will decrease, so the resistance will decrease. If the sliding arm is on the other end of the resistor, the resistance material through which the current flows will increase, and therefore the resistance will also increase.

5. When the buoy is close to the top of the fuel tank, the sliding arm on the variable resistor is close to the ground (negative) terminal, which means that the resistance becomes smaller and a relatively large current will return to the fuel gauge through the transmitter.

Reasons for fuel gauge not working:

1. The oil level sensor in the fuel tank and the gasoline filter. Failure to transmit the correct resistance value may cause the gauge to not display if there is a problem.

2. There is a problem with the oil meter itself, which can be well ruled out. Just replace it with a water temperature meter to know if it is the problem.

3. Replacing the watch core can determine the problem of the circuit drive of the instrument panel.

4. The problem of the sensor cable.
