When the coolant temperature rises again , the thermostat valve opens again. Until the temperature of all the coolant is stable , the thermostat valve will not open and close repeatedly. The phenomenon of thermostat valve opening and closing repeatedly in a short time is called thermostat oscillation . When this phenomenon occurs, it will increase the fuel consumption of the vehicle .

The thermostat can also be arranged in the outlet pipe of the radiator . This arrangement can reduce or eliminate the oscillation of the thermostat and accurately control the coolant temperature . However , its structure is complex and its cost is high . It is mainly used for high-performance vehicles and vehicles that often drive at high speed in winter .
